What is a Power Distribution Unit (PDU)?
A PDU is used to distribute currents and voltages in the power grid. In this case it is a " high-voltage power distributor ". In the field of e-mobility, the PDU gets its power from one or more batteries. Depending on the type of load, the individual outputs are protected against overvoltage with fuses.
The distribution of the currents is active or passive. With passive distribution, the output lines are connected in parallel, whereas with active distribution contactors control the distribution to the outputs.

Contactors are electromechanical switches. The switch is opened or closed by using an excitation voltage and a built-in coil. Contactors can be used to switch both DC and AC voltages with high currents.
What is the use of an active discharge system in the PDU?
In the event that a load is disconnected from the PDU, the line must be discharged within 60 seconds - to less than 60 V for direct current (DC) and to less than 48 V for alternating current (AC). Many loads or inverters support active discharging from the start. If this is not the case, an active discharge system can be integrated into the PDU for the respective output.

What is the benefit of a voltage converter in the PDU?
By installing voltage transformers in the Power Distribution Unit, it is also possible to supply other power networks in the low-voltage range, such as the vehicle electrical system.
